Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

In many parts of Nigeria, including Takum Local Government Area in Taraba State, issues of ethnic conflict, religious tension, and communal violence have plagued local communities, disrupting social harmony and peace. These conflicts often arise due to misunderstandings, competition for resources, and historical grievances. As communities work towards building peaceful coexistence, photography has emerged as a powerful tool for fostering understanding and empathy. By capturing images that reflect shared cultural values, cooperation, and community engagement, photography can serve as a medium for promoting peace. Photographs documenting efforts towards peacebuilding, inter-ethnic cooperation, and collaborative community development can help humanize diverse groups and show the benefits of peaceful coexistence. This study aims to examine how photography can be utilized as a medium for promoting peaceful coexistence in Takum, exploring how visual representation can contribute to conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While there have been significant efforts to promote peace and coexistence in Takum, persistent ethnic and communal tensions continue to hinder the region's stability. One potential avenue for peacebuilding is the use of media, particularly photography, to highlight instances of cooperation, peaceful relations, and shared cultural practices. However, the role of photography in this process remains underexplored. This study seeks to investigate how photography can be used to promote peaceful coexistence in Takum, capturing moments of unity and harmony that can serve as catalysts for wider social change.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it highlights the potential of photography as a peacebuilding tool in regions with ethnic and communal tensions. By documenting moments of cooperation and unity, photography can help challenge stereotypes, promote understanding, and encourage peaceful dialogue. The findings of this study could inform peacebuilding strategies and community development programs that use photography to foster social harmony.
